Ghost in the Water – RTRFM Top Track

May 31st, 2009

RTRFM listeners continue to be treated to a bevy of Hidden Shoal goodness with the last few weeks being no exception. Tangled Star’s gorgeous new single ’seabirdtown’ has been getting daily rotation, Apricot Rail continue their saturation of the airwaves in the lead up to their debut album (first single out this Tuesday!) and Hotels continue to be a station favourite. But it’s not just recent releases that are getting the love -  Ghost in the Water’s sublime track ‘Clean Sinks and Folded Laundry‘ was given ‘Top Track’ status by the wonderful Shannon Fox on her Monday Drivetime program.

We’ve said before a thousand times and here we are saying it again – if you don’t live in transmission range of the awesome RTRFM station (lets say – Norway or Busselton for instance) then do yourself a favour and stream shows such as Out To Lunch and Drivetime (for starters) live or on demand. You’ll thank us you will – honest!

The Caribbean “Scott Solter Re-Populates The Caribben” – Erasing Clouds

May 29th, 2009

Excerpt: “Some of those background pieces will be familiar to fans of the Caribbean and their album Populations, five songs from which are remixed for this EP. But any sense of familiarity is joined by an exotic sense of the new. Take, for example, the little melody line from “That Anxious Age”, which is looped and sped in strange ways that also push the song closer to techno or something. These songs have an air of the original versions, but have been given a new face.

“Please Mister” becomes a meditation on space-noise. “Do You Believe in Dinosaurs?” finds its inner groove. “Color Television” is a spooky dub dance party, in a graveyard. These songs are almost unrecognizable in remixed form, but still carry the spirit of the Caribbean’s music. The way the Caribbean gets intoxicated by the mystery of sound is intact. And as Solter overhauls their music, he makes us go back and re-hear what was already there in the original versions. Where did these sounds come from? Not from nowhere, they were there…just hidden, or living different lives. Scott Solter Re-Populates The Caribbean may be surprising for fans of the band, but it also should be exciting for everyone.”

Sleeping Me’s Cradlesongs Released

May 25th, 2009

Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of the debut album Cradlesongs by American ambient guitarist Sleeping Me.

Sleeping Me’s masterful debut album Cradlesongs is an homage to the bittersweet rise and fall of fortune, the discovery and evasiveness of identity and truth, the acceptance of distance and disappointment, and the poignancy of an ever-elusive yet omnipresent love. Tidal currents of delayed guitar carry the listener across an ocean of reverb, cast adrift beneath a brooding sky. Each track hands an elusive secret to the next, hinted at but never revealed. From the sad, sparse introductory piece ‘Empty Cradle’ to the epic melancholy of closing track ‘The Rattle In Our Throats’, Cradlesongs demonstrates an unmatchable elegance and poise, allowing these sorrowful symphonies to extend far beyond their own discrete edges and breathe new life into a crowded genre. Textural and meticulously composed, the emotive ambience of Sleeping Me is a quiet reminder of all the beauty and personal strife that is experienced in solitude.

“minimalism to the max… most elegant” – Luna Kafe

Cradlesongs is available now in digital format through the Hidden Shoal Store and all good digital retailers. The album will be available on CD on the 2nd June, distributed through n5Mailorder.
