Tarcutta Bio

Inspired by Sonic Youth, Theodore Adorno and sporadic bushwalking, instrumental trio Tarcutta formed in North Fitzroy, Melbourne in late 2004. The band’s name is derived from guitarist Justin Buckley’s hometown, a truckstop halfway between Sydney and Melbourne on the Hume Highway, and a familiar place for touring musicians trekking between the two capitals.
Peter Barrett (drums), Justin Buckley (guitar) and Justin Wheelahan (Hammond organ, piano) played in several Melbourne bands before forming Tarcutta. They recorded their demo in 2005 with James Cecil (ex-Architecture In Helsinki) and Lachland Wooden, and have played live around Melbourne with bands such as Because Of Ghosts, City City City, Bury The Sound and High Pass Filter.
Their self-titled debut album was recorded live at Head Gap studio, Melbourne, by Casey Rice, who has worked with Tortoise, Dirty Three and Hidden Shoal’s very own Fall Electric, and mixed at Rice’s Yarraville studio, Classixx. Album centrepiece ‘No Light No Shade’ features vocalist Jess Cornelius (Teeth & Tongue).
